About us
Connecting Queensland to the world
NQXT Pty Ltd’s North Queensland Export Terminal (the Terminal) is a multi-user export cargo handling facility within the Port of Abbot Point, about 25 kilometres north of the town of Bowen on Queensland’s east coast.
The Terminal has a nameplate capacity of 50 million tonnes per annum and provides export access for customers with high quality thermal or metallurgical coal mines in the Bowen and Galilee basins.
The Terminal has been operating safely, responsibly, and efficiently since 1984. Abbot Point Operations (APO) manages the Terminal’s day-to-day operations. More information about APO's operations and its commitment to safety, efficiency and community partnerships is available on their website. We work with mining companies, local communities, Traditional Owners and Governments to ensure this vital transport hub continues to deliver economic benefits to all Queenslanders.
The Terminal is owned by the Queensland Government's North Queensland Bulk Ports (NQBP) and leased by us under a 99-year leasehold that was acquired in June 2011. NQBP is the port authority which oversees the facilities at several working ports in North Queensland. You can read more about NQBP and its role on its website. The Port of Abbot Point has been declared as both a Strategic Port and a Priority Port Development Area (PPDA) by the Queensland Sustainable Ports Development Act of 2015 (SPDA).
Our people
Our people and their diverse skills are the foundation of our success. Through our operations and maintenance contractor, APO, around 400 people, both employees and contractors, work at the Terminal.
Almost 90 per cent of the employees who work at the Terminal live in the local Whitsunday region, further strengthening the local connection with community.
Our community
The Terminal has been an integral part of the Bowen and surrounding communities since it was constructed 1984.
The operation of the Terminal provides stable, well-paid jobs for local people. We are proud that these operations have enabled employees to enjoy long careers at the port, and to have trained hundreds of tradespeople and professionals. APO’s community programs also support the many local sporting and community groups.
We are proud that the operation of our Terminal has enabled the economic prosperity of the town of Bowen and the Whitsunday region for more than 40 years.
